John Weel Scholarship Fund

John Weel Scholarship Fund

In 2001 the MPDBA established the “John Weel Memorial Scholarship”. After the passing of John Weel, the JWMS Golf Tournament was founded in his memory.  John was a long time member of the Association and an active advocate of training & apprenticeship for the home building industry.

Since 2001 the Scholarship fund has been used to provide bursary’s for High School students “taking into consideration” a career in a building related field. Since its commencement, the MPDBA – JWM Scholarship fund has provided over $34,000 to assist local high school graduates.

After further consideration by the Board of Directors, we have decided to award bursaries to qualified post-secondary students committed to the trades in attending Georgian College Midland Campus. The Board feels that supporting students at the post secondary level will have a bigger impact on their education with less financial worries.  Further: we feel the money more accurately directed to Georgian College students allows a better-quality follow up by the Board. This financial support will allow students to finish pre-apprenticeship programs.
